Auburn, Ala.--This week was supposed to be the week when all of Auburn's 2016 football signees would be on campus enrolled in classes, but there are still questions unanswered after the big news on Sunday night that former Baylor signee and four-star running back Kameron Martin committed to the Tigers and will be immediately eligible to play this season.
More good news is that four-star quarterback Woody Barrett is scheduled to begin classes on Monday, giving the Tigers one of their key pieces of the class. With more than a month until the Auburn opens preseason practices on August 3, Barrett should have time to learn the basics of the offense before the opening game.
Woody Barrett is an Under Armour All-American who was the Florida Class 8A Player of the Year as a senior.
With redshirt freshman quarterback Tyler Queen coming off shoulder surgery in the spring and expected to be still in the recovery phase early in the fall, that means Barrett should get plenty of reps in practices along with the trio of senior Jeremy Johnson, sophomore Sean White and junior John Franklin as coaches Gus Malzahn and Rhett Lashlee look for the QB to lead the Tigers.
Unlike Barrett, fellow 2016 signees Marlon Character and Nick Coe are still waiting to get to Auburn with work to do academically. They will have an opportunity to do what is necessary to start classes at Auburn before practice begins with the possibility to enroll in late July. A four-star defensive back, Character still needs to improve on the ACT while Coe has to re-take an online course to get his grades in order.
Nick Coe, in addition to being a football standout, won multiple state and national wrestling championships at Asheboro, N.C., High School.
Another name that is still out there is a familiar one to Auburn fans, Stephen Davis Jr.. The two-way player out of South Carolina was originally committed to the Tigers before backing off that decision last fall. Because of an injury situation and academics, he didn't sign with anyone in February and there has been plenty of speculation that he might end up at Auburn after all this summer, but at the moment that doesn't look like it will happen, but is subject to change.
