Auburn, Ala.--The Auburn Tigers will play a football game vs. Penn State on Sept. 18, 2021 and will take on the Nittany Lions in a rematch on the following season on Sept. 17th at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Auburn Athletic Director Jay Jacobs made the announcement on Monday of a series that will feature the first-ever regular season matchups between the Tigers and an opponent from the Big Ten conference.
“This is another great opportunity for our players and fans to be part of something special,” Jacobs said. “Bringing together elite programs rich in tradition is what college football is all about. We look forward to this home-and-home series with Penn State.”
Adding Penn State to the schedule means the Tigers were forced to reschedule the series with the Cal Bears. Auburn will now face them Sept. 9, 2023 on the road in Berkeley before facing them in Jordan-Hare Stadium on Sept. 7, 2024.
The Tigers defeated the Nittany Lions in the 2003 Capital One Bowl at Orlando by a score of 13-9. Penn State won the previous matchup, 43-14, on Jan. 1, 1996 at the Outback Bowl in Tampa.
Auburn is 10-8-2 vs. current members of the Big Ten. The Tigers are 1-0 vs. Indiana, 1-1 vs. Michigan, 1-0 vs. Michigan State, 1-0-1 vs. Ohio State, 1-1 vs. Penn State and 1-2-1 vs. Wisconsin. Against Big Ten teams that were in other conferences when they played the Tigers, Auburn is 1-0 vs. Rutgers, 2-1 vs. Maryland and 1-3 vs. Nebraska.
