It's not yet July 4th, but that didn't stop the Auburn Tigers from celebrating a few days early on Friday when four-star junior college wide receiver Brandon Martincommitted to Gus Malzahn's program over offers from several other schools including Florida and Mississippi State. A physical prospect at 6-4 1/2, 220, the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College standout is one of the premier players at his position in the country and gives Coach Kodi Burns a mature receiver to build around with plenty of young talent on the 2017 roster.
A visitor for Big Cat Weekend on the Plains when he had the chance to spend time with several of Auburn's top targets, the big-time wide receiver said that experience was one that showed him he could feel at home in the program and also excel on and off the field.
“The Big Cat visit, I enjoyed it," Martin said. "It was a lot of fun and one of the things that got my attention is they are graduating a lot of the athletes and I need my degree."
A big reason for Martin's commitment to Auburn is the bond that he has already built with Burns. A former quarterback turned wide receiver in Auburn's offense under Malzahn, Burns knows the offense very well and has a strong work ethic on and off the field. In addition to that Martin said he's just someone that he could enjoy playing for.
"He's just a cool coach."
Originally signing with LSU out of Prime Prep Academy in Dallas, Martin played in the Under Armour All-American Game following his senior season and was considered one of the nation's top prep wide receivers.
"After playing for now closed Prime Prep Academy in Dallas, Texas Martin really burst on to the scene at the Under Armour All-America Game where he first had his chance to play in front of scouts and media," Scout National Recruiting Analyst Greg Powers said. "He was one of the best wide receivers there and was easily the best kept secret in college football recruiting.
"He is big and has great speed. He has a plus catch radius and the really satisfying part of his game is that he was a polished route runner who could get separation giving him even more space to showcase the skills that make him athletically special."
Playing last season at Prime Prep, Martin will be a freshman at Mississippi Gulf Coast this fall and will have three to play three at Auburn beginning in 2017.
Martin becomes Auburn's 10th commitment for the 2017 class and second in the last week, joining kicker Anders Carlson. The full list of Auburn commitments can be found HERE
