Malzahn Talks Saturday Practice, Still Not Ready To Name QB

Auburn Coach Gus Malzahn discusses Saturday's practice and the decision to keep the QB race going.

Auburn, Ala.--The Auburn Tigers practiced in full pads on Saturday morning and with two weeks left until facing Clemson in the season opener Coach Gus Malzahn said the focus for his team is on the little things as they head into game week mode on Tuesday.

“We had a good practice today with the older guys a lot of situational work, a lot of special teams work — a lot of good on good," Malzahn said. "We are getting to the end as far as our personnel on special teams. We really wanted to give our guys opportunities to get our personnel set on special teams for the next two weeks when we start game planning for Clemson in that area."

Even with the plans to begin work on Clemson next week, the question of who will be the starting quarterback for Auburn still remains. Saying that all three of his quarterbacks in the race, Sean White, Jeremy Johnson and John Franklin, got reps with the first unit, Malzahn said at the moment the race is still ongoing.

"I’m not ready to name a starting quarterback," Malzahn said. "It’s still a very good competition. Hopefully we will know something in the near future, but not right now. It’s too good of a competition, we are going to let those guys compete a little longer and see what happens.

"Not quite there yet, but that’s not a bad thing once again there is really good competition," he added of the race. "You can tell the intensity as it gets a little bit closer gets different each day, which I think is good. That would be ideal or that to name a starter at some point in the near future. We will see how that unfolds.”
