Jacksonville, Fla.--Already committed to the Auburn Tigers to play quarterback in the 2018 class, athletic Joey Gatewood is rated a four-star prospect by Scout.com and one of the top prospects at his position in the country.
Making several visits to the campus in the past two years, Gatewood was in Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday night to see his first Auburn game in person and left flying high following a 56-3 blowout win over Arkansas.
“It was exciting,” Gatewood said. “It was a little cold, but it was exciting and a great atmosphere. I love the place.
“It’s everything I really expected,” he added. “It was great and a good time being there.”
Auburn’s offense has broken out in a big way the last three games with the Tigers and coordinator Rhett Lashlee settling into a routine with him calling the plays. Punishing the Razorbacks on the ground from start to finish, Auburn put up one of the best rushing days in the history of the Southeastern Conference and Gatewood said he felt like it was only on a matter of time.
“I knew that was going to come eventually,” Gatewood said. “Each game they were progressing with execution and this game they showed it. It was a great job on both sides of the ball and a great win.”
Lashlee was very instrumental in Gatewood originally choosing the Tigers and has been by his side since then. The 6-3, 205 quarterback notes that the two have formed a bond that runs deeper than just coach and prospect while adding it’s something that is continuing to grow.
“It’s exciting because he’s the one who mainly recruits me,” Gatewood said. “Seeing him do that, it’s a good feeling that he knows what he’s doing. Our relationship is unique. He’s like my best friend almost. It’s unique.
“I’m ready to come in and get to work. “I feel just as good with it (his commitment). 100 percent.”
