Auburn, Ala.--Completing just 20 passes in 14 games leading up to Friday’s Class 2A final vs. Aliceville, the Fyffe Red Devils are the definition of ground-and-pound football. They played that style to perfection in a dominating 28-0 victory at Jordan-Hare Stadium, rushing for 310 yards on 56 carries and completing just one pass in three attempts.
Holding the ball for 28:55 compared to just 19:05 for Aliceville, Fyffe held the ball for over 10 minutes in the fourth quarter alone to salt away the win.
The player of the game was senior running back Dilan Kilpatrick as he earned MVP honors with 158 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries. Payton Anderson added 53 yards and a score on 11 carries while quarterback Seth Benefield chipped in with 51 yards on 11 carries.
In the first quarter the Red Devils took advantage of a short field to punch in the first score of the game when Kilpatrick raced over from 17 yards to put Fyffe on the board. With a 7-0 advantage the 2014 champs put together a classic drive, covering 67 yards in 10 plays and taking over four minutes off the clock before a Payton Anderson touchdown made it 13-0.
Late in the first half it was another chance for the Red Devils to wear down Aliceville as they went 40 yards in 10 plays before Will Mashburn’s 40-yard field goal pushed the lead to 16.
The second half wasn’t any better for the Yellow Jackets as Kilpatrick added to his totals with a 23-yard score with 6:27 in the third quarter to give Fyffe a commanding 22-0 lead. In the fourth quarter his third touchdown of the game put Aliceville in a huge 28-point hole.
The final possession of the game told the story as Fyffe took over on its own 26 with 6:32 remaining and never gave the ball back to Aliceville, running 10 plays and earning three first downs to run the clock out on the victory.
