Auburn, Ala.--Seven games into the 2016-17 Auburn basketball season after watching his Tigers come away with six victories, Coach Bruce Pearl said he likes what he is seeing from his point guards.

Freshman Jared Harper, the starter, is averaging 12.0 points and 2.6 rebounds per game. He has 18 assists, 10 turnovers and a dozen steals while averaging 25.3 minutes of playing time per contest.

Graduate transfer Ronnie Johnson is averaging 5.9 points and 1.1 rebounds. He has contributed 15 assists to go with five turnovers and five steals.

In Auburn’s last outing, a 74-70 road victory at UAB, Harper led all scorers with 21 points while adding five rebounds plus three assists without a turnover.

Harper came off the bench to hit 4-5 field goals as he scored eight points to go with a pair of steals. Harper nailed five three-pointers.

“We got great point guard play,”?Pearl said of his team’s performance at UAB’s Bartow Arena.

“He and Ronnie have got a good thing going, a really good thing going,” the coach added.

Ronnie Johnson transferred to Auburn from the University of Houston.

“Ronnie has picked us up and that is the best Jared has played,” Pearl pointed out. “He had a little run like that against Georgia State.

“I told you he was going to be worth the price of admission and he is as a little, quick guard with range he kept us in range,” Pearl said about the five-foot-ten freshman. “It is great that he has that kind of step-up.”

The Tigers are taking a break from competition during fall semester final exams before returning to action with a Dec. 12th game vs. Boston College at Madison Square Garden in New York City as part of the Under Armour Reunion.
