Auburn Guard Jared Harper Named SEC Freshman Basketball Player of the Week

The Southeastern Conference has honored an Auburn freshman basketball player.

Auburn, Ala.--After matching his season high for points in a win over Oklahoma and topping it vs. UConn two days later, Auburn's Jared Harper has been named the SEC Basketball Freshman of the Week.

Harper, a 5-10 point guard, scored 21 points vs. the Oklahoma Sooners and 22 vs. the Huskies as Auburn improved its record to 10-2 going into Thursday’s SEC opener vs. Georgia.

In Friday’s win vs. UConn the guard’s layup with 27 seconds left in overtime was the winning margin.

In Wednesday’s victory vs. Oklahoma the freshman made 11-12 free throws, including 7-8 in the final two minutes and two seconds.

Coach Bruce Pearl had high praise for the freshman after the UConn game. “Jared Harper is special and he has put it back-to-back now. He wanted that ball and he is sticking his nose in and making plays defensively now where he went through a little bit of a lull where he was a defensive liability. Now he is out there making plays.”

Harper, who has 11 games this season, is averaging 12.8 points per game, which is third on the team and 20th in the SEC. He is fourth in the league with his 2.3-1 assist-to-turnover ratio, he is tied for fifth in steals at 1.8 per game, he is ninth in three-point percentage (37.5) and 10th in threes made per game at 2.4.
