Stone Mountain, Ga.--Committed since the summer before his junior year, four-star defensive back Carlito Gonzalez made it official on Wednesday when he signed with the Auburn Tigers at a ceremony at Peachtree Ridge High School.
A 6-0, 190-pounder, Gonzalez has the talent to play a number of different spots in Auburn’s defense but is expected to get his first look at safety for the Tigers.
That will allow him to learn from a group of veterans that have played a lot of football for Auburn, including guys that Tray Matthews, Stephen Roberts and Nick Ruffin.
“I’m going to learn from Tray Matthews of course and the other two safeties that are here,” Gonzalez said. “I feel like I’m going to come in and play as a freshman and make an impact and just learn and grow.”
Gonzalez will have the chance to work with a veteran on the coaching staff as well with new DB Coach Greg Brown having vast experience both in college and in the NFL. Getting to know his new coach over the last month and spending a lot of time with him on his official visit, Gonzalez said he’s looking forward to playing for him on the Plains.
“He's a very nice person, very down to earth guy,” he said. “He coached Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Landon Collins. When I found that out I was like, 'Wow,' because those are two players I look up to and they're both safeties. He's just a very down-to-earth person and he's cool all the time. I feel like it's going to be great.
“It’s always good sitting down with Coach Brown because he’s got so many years of experience,” Gonzalez added. “I’m just learning stuff and I’m not even here yet. It’s going to be something serious when I do get here. I learned a lot.”
Excited about his commitment and never backing off his decision to be a Tiger, Gonzalez said now that it’s done he’s just read to get to Auburn and get it going.
“I just love everything about it,” Gonzalez said. “It's beautiful there all the time, even when it's raining. I'm already clicking with my teammates, it's tradition, it's everything. God watches over this place. He's been watching over me along with it.”
