Auburn, Ala.--Coach Gus Malzahn continued a trend of looking to the high school ranks for a coach and this time it was just up the road as Opelika’s head coach, Brian Blackmon, has joined the Auburn Tigers football staff as an off-the-field analyst beginning this spring.
Coaching for 20 years at Opelika, 13 as the offensive coordinator for Hall of Fame Coach Spence McCracken, Blackmon has been the head coach and athletic director for the Bulldogs the last six seasons.
In his six years the Bulldogs have made a pair of appearances in the state title game, the last coming this past year when they fell to Ramsay at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
A member of the 1991 state title team at Robert E. Lee High, Blackmon started his career at North Alabama before transferring to Troy State. He earned a BS in accounting from Troy before getting a Master’s degree from Auburn University.
While at North Alabama, Blackmon was roommates with new Auburn offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey.
