2017 Auburn Baseball Week 1 In Review

Taking a look back at the opening weekend for Auburn baseball.

Auburn, Ala.--It was a solid start to year number two for Coach Butch Thompson’s Auburn Tigers as they took three out of four from George Washington University over the weekend and played solid baseball in all three phases of the game.

Splitting a pair of one-run games to finish the weekend following a pair of shutouts, Auburn got some timely hitting and looks to be much improved defensively. Thompson said so far the ability to play defense and take away hits has been a big plus for his team.

“I would say the most consistent thing we did for four games was defend the field and defend the field properly,” the coach pointed out.

The other strength of the team so far is the depth at the plate. With a different player coming up big in every game, shortstop Luke Jarvis said it’s fun to have so many guys that are capable of making plays.

“That’s the thing about this team is that you don’t really worry because the next guy’s got it,” Jarvis said. “I don’t have to really press. It’s just one of those things where today it will be me, tomorrow it will be a new guy. That’s what’s awesome about this team.”

Player Of The Week:

Auburn senior Daniel Robert had a big weekend for the Tigers, leading the team with a .500 (8-16) batting average and collecting hits in all four games. He has now reached base in 19 straight games in which he’s had a plate appearance, dating back to last season when he missed time with a wrist injury. He also performed well on the mound, pitching one and two/thirds innings of scoreless relief.

Pitcher Of The Week:

This is a three-way tie between Keegan Thompson, Casey Mize and Cole Lipscomb. Back on the mound following a year spent rehabbing following Tommy John surgery, Thompson allowed just four hits in six innings to pick up a win. On Saturday, Mize allowed two hits and struck out seven in five innings while Lipscomb struck out four in four innings and didn’t allow a hit.
