Birmingham, Ala.--Picking up his first career SEC win on Sunday at Georgia as the 17th ranked Auburn Tigers took two of three from the Bulldogs to improve to 5-1 in league play, right-hander Davis Daniel has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week.
Needing a big performance from the Montgomery native after having to go deep in the bullpen the first two days of the series, Daniel earned threw six shutout innings, striking out six while allowing just five total base runners in his first career start away from Plainsman Park.
Improving to 2-0 on the season and dropping his ERA to 4.44, Daniel now has 25 strikeouts in 26 1/3 innings pitches on the season with only six walks.
He becomes the second-straight Auburn player to earn SEC Freshman of the Week honors, joining teammate Will Holland for his play in the sweep of Florida the previous weekend.
Auburn returns to action Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in Montgomery when the Tigers face rival Alabama in the Capital City Classic at Riverwalk Stadium. The takes on #7 South Carolina this weekend at Plainsman Park in a series matching two of the four teams tied atop the SEC standings after two weeks of play.
