Valdosta, Ga.--One of the quickest and most explosive linebacker prospects in the South for the 2018 class, 6-1, 200 Zakoby McClain made a name for himself recently at the Nike Opening Atlanta Regional with his performance in the drills.
Running a very respectable 40-yard dash time of 4.77 seconds on a slow track, McClain had a time of 4.43 seconds in the shuttle and a vertical leap of just over 32 inches.
During spring practice he was on the Auburn campus to check out the Tigers for the first time in person and left with Coach Gus Malzahn’s program at the top of his early list.
“It went real good,” McClain said. “It was way better than I expected. I liked meeting the coaches and the players and I liked the facilities. I liked everything. They made me feel like I was at home.
“Auburn is number one,” he stated.
Also looking at LSU, Oregon and South Carolina among his early favorites, McClain said Auburn’s lead is “kinda big” at the moment and Coach Travis Williams is one of the reasons why.
“I like the coaches,” McClain said. “I want a father-figure coach, and they have that (in T-Will). Me and him have gotten real close. He’s cool. He’s nice and laid back. He keeps it real with you and doesn’t sugarcoat it.”
With plans to possibly make a decision as early as August before his senior year at powerhouse Valdosta High, McClain said he’s hoping to be back in Auburn this weekend for Saturday’s A-Day game at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
