Jason Caldwell's Friday Auburn Mailbag Column Features Fooball

Auburn football is featured in this edition of Jason Caldwell's Friday Mailbag column as he answers questions on AU sports.

WSlay: One possession to score a TD...no substitutions allowed...what 11 are on the field?

That’s a tough one. I’ll go with Jarrett Stidham at QB, Kamryn Pettway at RB, Chandler Cox at H-Back, Darius Slayton, Nate Craig and Will Hastings at WR, Darius James at LT, Marquel Harrell at LG, Austin Golson at C, Mike Horton at RG and Braden Smith at RT.

aubtime: Football recruiting. What are the top 5 uncommitted players you think we get?

softball which incoming freshmen you think will be a major contributor next year (being we losing Cooper and Fagan. Also do you think Snow (the older) will be healthy next year.

It’s tough this early in the process to pick five guys I think Auburn will definitely sign, but I like LB/Athlete Nathaniel Watson from Maplesville, CB Jalyn Armour-Davis from St. Paul’s, S Myles Mason from Pleasant Grove, S Quindarius Monday from Carver-Atlanta and WR Matthew Hill from Brookwood in Atlanta. As for incoming softball players, Taylon Snow will be an instant impact player for the Tigers with sister Tannon Snow also expected to be good to go. Outfielder Livy Schiele from California should also be an impact player.

zig1983; Out of all the signees for football, not counting early enrollees, who do you think might have the best chance to make an immediate impact or see a lot of playing time this upcoming season?

I think both of the pass rushers will have a chance to make an impact. Both Markaviest “Big Cat” Bryant and Tadarian Moultry are intense competitors and have the skill set to play early. I like their chances to be on the field right away. Moultry is one of the most explosive defensive players I have seen in person in a long time and his physicality should allow him to make the transition pretty easy to the edge rusher position.

gtwstock: What do you think the % is that Auburn softball will a) host a super regional and b) make it to OKC.

Right now I would put Auburn’s percentage at being a host for a super regional at about 70 percent. They can’t afford a loss to Mississippi State this weekend and need to win the series in Tuscaloosa. Those are my thoughts. As for making it to OKC, in the end this team is still very mentally tough so I think they will have a real chance to make a third straight trip to the College World Series. That is what it takes in those situations so I give them a good shot of making it back if Makayla Martin and Haley Fagan return and are ready to play up to their potential.

AUHighmark: What was your opinion of Bobby Petrino, both professionally and personally?  Did his players love him, hate him, or something in between?

I really enjoyed Petrino and he was always great to me and Mark when working with him when he was at Auburn. He’s definitely tough on his guys, but he was also probably the best play-caller I have seen during his time on the Plains. The guy is as good as it gets in terms of putting his offense in the right play at the right time.

AUHighmark: Who is the best offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator Auburn has had in your tenure covering the Tigers? To clarify that question, I'm talking about overall performance and ability, not personality.

I think I just answered one of them. It is tough for me to go against Petrino after seeing him at Auburn. He was really good. I would have to give a nod to Gus Malzahn as well. Despite some struggles the last two years, he knows offense and coaches the running game as well as anyone I have ever seen. The turnaround of the offense in his first season at Auburn was impressive and then the Tigers followed that with a terrific offensive performance that was key in the 2010 national championship.

On defense I really like Kevin Steele. He’s a guy I knew very little about personally, but have really enjoyed watching him work. On defense I thought Gene Chizik as a coordinator was very good.

Hometown Tiger: Did Clint Myers really make the trio that got in trouble shovel horse (manure) at the equestrian center?

I don’t know if that was a punishment for the trio in this case, but I have heard that several coaches have used that method before so I wouldn’t be surprised.
