Auburn Coach Gus Malzahn Is Less Than Enthusiastic About an Early Signing Period

Gus Malzahn gives his take on a rules change that will impact the next football signing class.

Auburn, Ala.--Gus Malzahn seems to be taking a wait and see attitude on a recently approved rules change for NCAA football regarding an early signing period.

Beginning with the 2018 class high school seniors can sign in December during a three-day window instead of waiting for the traditional signing period the first week in February.

This year the early period for football will run Dec. 20-22.

“I was fine the way it was, but any time you do make a change there is always a learning curve that goes with it,” Malzahn said. “I think I can probably answer that question better a year from now after we kind of go through it.”

Malzahn, who is heading into his fifth season as head coach at Auburn, said that he believes the rules change is significant.

“It will definitely have an impact,”? the coach pointed out. “Any time you change the recruiting calendar, and all of that, it is going to be a learning curve and the things that go with that.

“Of course, I am a former high school coach and I am always concerned about the high school coaches and the guys who are going deep in the playoffs on all of that,” he added.
