Auburn Hopeful That Casey Mize Can Go In SEC Tournament Vs. Ole Miss

Auburn will face Ole Miss in the SEC Tournament on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. in Hoover.

Auburn, Ala.--After missing last year’s SEC Tournament, the Auburn Tigers (34-22, 16-14) return to Hoover this year and will see a familiar face on day one when they square off against the Ole Miss Rebels (36-20, 14-16). Taking two of three from Ole Miss in the final regular season series of the year, Coach Butch Thompson’s team turned things around following a seven-game losing streak and he said the goal now is to play even better, beginning Tuesday.

“We just want to try to play our best baseball every day,” he said. “I think Tuesday is huge. I think it’s great for Auburn folks to be in Birmingham and for Auburn to be in that tournament. We’re supposed to be up there. I want to make sure we’re trying to attack every inning because this bleeds into everything you do this time of year.

“I want to come back and play a really solid ballgame and execute very well on Tuesday and find a way to win a ballgame. Then we’ll just take what happens from there. I think that’s all you should have a team interested in is just playing the best baseball you possibly can right now, each and every day.”

The biggest question mark for Auburn heading into the postseason is the health of sophomore pitcher Casey Mize. Scratched from his start against Ole Miss and missing three of the last four weekends, Mize is a possibility on Tuesday, his coach said.

“Keegan (Thompson) wants the ball but we’ll have to continue to see,” Butch Thompson said. “I’m not as hopeful for that as maybe he is, but I like a player to want that. Casey is more probable and possible.

“Casey actually threw today and threw well. We did some flat ground work today and it went good. I think he’s kind of day-to-day. I don’t want to give a report and that change again because there has been enough back-and-forth there the last few weeks.”

If neither are on the mound on Tuesday the start could fall to freshman Ryan Watson, Coach Butch Thompson said.

Auburn will face Ole Miss on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at the Hoover Met in game three of the SEC Tournament.
