Niceville, Fla.--Teammates with Auburn wide receiver Elijah Stove in high school, big defensive back Juanyeh Thomas has been a frequent visitor to the Plains this spring. Back on campus over the weekend to check out the Tigers, Thomas said it was another opportunity for him to continue to build a bond with the coaching staff and players as he gets closer to making a decision.
“It felt good just to come back on campus and speak with Coach Gus (Gus Malzahn), Coach (Greg) Brown, Coach Kodi (Burns) and everyone,” Thomas said. “That felt good.
“I’m feeling more comfortable,” he added. “I’m getting to know all of the players and stuff and talking to Nate Craig and Kyle (Davis), Eli, and all of the coaches and stuff.”
While he said he’s not getting pressure from the guys to commit to Auburn, Thomas said there’s no question that having Stove and the other guys on campus is big for him.
“If I do decide to go there it would give me a big push and help me out,” Thomas said. “He (Stove) could be like my mentor.”
Saying he’s “very close” to naming a leader, Thomas said the time is drawing near to when that will happen and it’s down between two schools.
“It’s Auburn and Florida,” Thomas said. “Auburn and Florida are close to being my top. The last time I was in Gainesville was in April. I’m supposed to be going back on the 25-30th of June.”
Hoping to make a decision sometime in August, just before his regular season starts, Thomas said he feels good about things right now. Admitting that the process is a difficult one, he said the Tigers are pulling out in front following his most recent trip.
“My top three (Georgia Tech being the third) are all close,” Thomas said. “Auburn just inches me ahead because I just love the feeling of Auburn and everything.”
