Hawley, who came to Auburn in December of 1998 along with head coach Tommy Tuberville, was responsible for practice schedules and other day to day functions of the football program.
Athletic department sources say the dismissal is the result of a verbal confrontation with a walk-on football player. As part of his job duties, Hawley oversees the day to day details of walk-ons being a part of the football team.
The university issued this statement on Monday: "It is University policy to not discuss the specifics of personnel matters. However, without getting into specifics, there are certain types of conduct that Auburn University and the Auburn Athletic Department will not tolerate. It is Auburn University's policy to take swift, decisive action in the form of immediate discharge when an employee's actions cross that line. As a result the individual involved has been terminated effective immediately."
Hawley, who will turn 65 years old in December, has worked for 42 years as an administrator at the college and high school levels. He held a similar position at Ole Miss before coming to Auburn.
