Georgia Prep Star Discusses Visit To See Tigers

A Peach State defensive standout gives his opinion on the Tigers after spending the weekend in Auburn.

Blakely, Ga.--Octavious Balkcom announced last October that he planned to sign with the Auburn Tigers. On Sunday, after taking his official visit to Auburn, he says he still plans to sign with AU in February, but the Auburn coaches obviously still have recruiting work to do.

The big linebacker is not finished taking official visits. He is headed to Knoxville next weekend to check out the Tennessee Volunteers. The following week he has a trip scheduled to Tallahassee to see Florida State.

"It was a nice visit," Balkcom says of his weekend on the AU campus. "Spencer Johnson, Jay Ratliff, Tez (Tez Doolittle) and bunch of the guys were my host. We went to the basketball game, we went out to eat and the we went out after that and had a real good time."

A 6-4, 225-pounder with 4.6 speed, he was the kingpin of a strong Early County High defense. He finished his senior season with nearly 100 tackles and is also a standout in the shot put. He also put on a good show in December at the Georgia North-South All-Star game in Columbus.

The linebacker had been to AU for unofficial visits, checking out the Tigers on football Saturdays. He says he is impressed with AU's game day atmosphere.

Balkcom notes that he is interested in being a physical education major in college. He met with academic advisers, coaches and toured the campus. "The whole visit went great," he says. "It was straight. I am stronger right now about Auburn than I was."
