Bota Quits AU Basketball Team

Auburn, Ala.--Sophomore center and power forward Marin Bota quit the men's basketball team just one week before Auburn's first exhibition game on Thursday, Nov. 1.

The seven-foot-one, 235-pounder saw action in 27 games for the Tigers last season, but his playing time was limited. He averaged just 0.7 points and 1.0 rebound per outing.

The Tijarica, Croatia native is still enrolled in class at the university, but could decide to transfer to another institution in the States or return to his home country.

"I wish Marin the best," head coach Cliff Ellis said in a prepared statement on Friday.. "I have thoroughly enjoyed him as a person and working on developing his game."

Bota's playing time was in jeopardy with the addition of freshman Marco Killingsworth and the return to health of senior Mack McGadney, who is back from a knee injury and a suspension from the squad. The Tigers open their two-game exhibition season Thursday against the Global Sports All-Stars. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum.
