A player who was hotly contested as a recruit signed with the Tigers.
Waynesboro, Miss.--A long and vicious recruiting battle came to an end on Wednesday when safety Steve Gandy
signed with the Auburn
Tigers over the Ole Miss
Rebels. A 6-1 ½, 193 athlete from Wayne County High, Gandy is a player that could figure into the playing rotation at either safety or linebacker.
As a senior, the outside linebacker with sub 4.5 speed finished with more than 150 tackles plus a dozen quarterback sacks. He played a major role for the second season in back-to-back state titles for the War Eagles, who were 14-1 this past season.
Gandy is expected to get his start in the secondary for the Tigers because of his speed and athleticism. He chose the Tigers over Ole Miss, Arizona State, Alabama, Tennessee and others.
Gandy was a standout performer at a summer football camp at AU and has been high on the Tigers since that trip to AU.
