Wayne County was one of the top teams in the south last year. They had three very good college prospects in the class of 2004 in Cedrick Jones, Steve Gandy, and Mike McLaughlin, and they have another big time player coming along in Jerrell Powe.
At 6-3 and 322 pounds, Powe is a huge defensive tackle that claims early
offers from Auburn, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and Alabama. Auburn signed
Gandy and McLaughlin last year, and the Tigers are among Powe's Top 5 as well.
"My Top 5 right now is Miami, Florida State, Auburn, Virginia Tech, and
Florida," said Powe. "My favorite team growing up was Mississippi
State. I went to a lot of games last year: Alabama/LSU, Auburn/Ole Miss,
Southern Miss/TCU, and Southern Miss/Nebraska."
Powe plays center on his basketball team. He is also a left fielder on his
baseball team. He has picked the SEC Defensive Player of the Year as one that
he patterns his game after.
"I like Chad Lavalais. He makes plays and has great instincts."
Powe did much the same last year with 71 tackles and 14 sacks for Wayne
County. With a 370 pound bench press and a 550 squat, Powe is a load in the
middle of the defensive line.
