Soccer Tigers Advance To SEC Semi-Finals

Baton Rouge, La.--Auburn survived and advanced to the second round of the SEC Women's Soccer Tournament on Thursday night by defeating the Georgia Bulldogs 3-2.

Auburn (10-6-1), the sixth seed in the eight-team event, will play No. 7 seed Ole Miss at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in the semi-finals at LSU Soccer Complex.

Kellie Evans scored in the 70th minute for what proved to be the winning goal on an assist from Gretchen Winter. Auburn had tied the game 12 minutes earlier on a shot by Sandra Carnes after a crossing pass from Sara Power.

The Tigers took a quick 1-0 lead three minutes into the match when Chrissy Culver scored her first career goal. Georgia (14-6-1) regained the lead 2-1 by halftime. However, with goalie Megan Rivera making seven saves for AU, the Bulldogs could not score again.

"This really showed the character of this team," Auburn coach Karen Richter said. "I am so proud of them. We are such a young squad and Georgia had been in this position and we have not. They did an awesome job of coming from back from behind and holding on for the victory."

It was AU's first SEC Tournament victory in five seasons. Ole Miss advanced to meet Auburn by upsetting second seed Mississippi State 2-1.
