Hayes is considered one the top pass-rushers in the Southeast. As a junior, he was third in the state with quarterback sacks (18 1/2) while earning a spot on the Class 2 All-State as well as the All-Big-Bend all-star team.
Recently in a jamboree showdown against defending 5A State champs Daytona Beach Mainland, Hayes was all over the field. He intercepted a pass and broke at least five tackles on a long touchdown return. He also had two sacks, a tackle for loss and several other stops.
"Eugene sees the field so well," Madison County Head Coach Frankie Carroll says. "He finds a way to get to the ball and has great instincts. He'll be playing on Sundays soon."
Hayes is rated the No.28 best player on The Insiders.com 2005 South Hot 100 list.
