Gilbert Knocked Down, But Will Not Be Out For Long

The Tigers' secondary took another hit when Zach Gilbert suffered an injury on Tuesday, however, the injury report for the redshirt freshman is better than expected.

Auburn, Ala.--Redshirt freshman cornerback Zach Gilbert went down in practice on Tuesday grabbing his leg following a collision with a wide receiver and was taken to East Alabama Medical Center for X-rays following the practice.

Fortunately for the Tigers, who are running with reduced depth at the cornerback position with a season-ending injury to David Irons Jr. and the decision of Courtney Denson to leave the team, Gilbert's injury was just a bruised knee and he will only miss about a week of practice time, according to head coach Tommy Tuberville.

"Hopefully, we will get him back out on the field real soon," Tuberville said.

Zach Gilbert has been very impressive in coverage during preseason workouts.

The 5-10, 183-pounder, who is a walk-on for the Tigers, was slotted at second team cornerback behind Carlos Rogers following the injury to Irons and Denson's departure, however, for the next week and possibly the opening game of the season, redshirt freshman Patrick Lee will take over the second team duties.

However, with Gilbert not expected to miss much practice time he will likely be able to return to the rotation quickly and could regain his spot on the second team prior to conference play.
