Indianpolis, Ind.--Auburn swimmer Margaret Hoelzer won a gold medal at the 2004 FINA Short Course World Swimming Championships on Saturday night with a dominating performance in the 200 backstroke.
Hoelzer, a key swimmer on Auburn
's 2004 national championship women's team who is from Huntsville, placed fourth in the 100 backstroke on Friday. In the 200, she led the whole way and finished 2 1/2 seconds ahead of runnerup Tayliah Zimmer of Australia. Hoelzer swam a time of 2:08.05.
Hoelzer, who took second place in the 200 backstroke at the 2004 NCAA Championships, qualified sixth with a time of 2:11.33 during
Saturday's morning session.
The Championships, which are being held in Conseco Fieldhouse, continue on Sunday and wrap up on Monday. ESPN2 is carrying the event on a tape-delay basis each night.
Hoelzer's teammates are in Auburn training for the 2004-2005 collegiate season.
