Women's Hoops Team Struggles

Tuscaloosa, Ala.--Auburn put on one of its worst performances of the season in falling 78-70 to rival Alabama in a women's basketball game at Coleman Coliseum.

Auburn's record slipped to 14-5 overall and 2-4 in the conference. Alabama improved its records to 2-4 in the league and 12-7 overall.

Auburn, ranked 22nd nationally, was burned by a home team that hit 10 treys and made 52 percent of its shots.

"Our game has to be spacing people out and taking advantage of that and we didn't do that tonight," AU Coach Joe Ciampi said after the embarrassing loss. "It was a battle of wits and we broke down and gave them five baskets that turned the game around. We just didn't do the little things. We couldn't stop them when we needed to."

Tide guard Beth Vice scored 20 points with 18 coming on three-pointers. The Tide made 10-23 from three-point land while Auburn was 5-10.

Alabama took the lead with a 13-5 run in the first half that gave the Tide a 36-28 advantage. Auburn never caught the home team as it hit just 37.3 percent of its shots to 48 percent for Bama.

Auburn returns to action with a Sunday home game vs. Tennessee at 2 p.m.
