One of Auburn's prime prospects, who was expecting to see Chizik at Auburn as his position coach, doesn't seem worried that the Tigers lost the defensive coordinator to the University of Texas on Monday.
"That is kind of surprising," cornerback Aairon Savage says. "I am sure Coach Nall (offensive line coach Hugh Nall) has called tonight to tell me, but we had a basketball game tonight and I am just getting in," Savage told Inside the Auburn Tigers on Monday night. Nall recruits the Albany area for the Tigers.
"Before I went to the football camp at Auburn last summer I didn't know who Coach Chizik was, but when I got to meet him I liked him just like I like Coach Nall," Savage says. "I am sure whoever Coach Tuberville brings in is going to be the same type of guy. Coach Chizik leaving doesn't affect my decision. I am going to play at Auburn."
Savage was so impressive at an Auburn football camp he got an earlier offer and decided to commit to the Tigers. He was Auburn's fourth public verbal for the 2006 signee class back in August.
Despite opponents avoiding his side of the field, Savage just completed a strong senior season at Westover High School at cornerback and is talented enough to compete for immediate playing time this fall at Auburn.
"I believe I am a good cover guy," says Savage, who blanketed all-comers at the summer camp he attended at AU. A 5-11, 173-pounder who has been clocked at 4.48 in the 40-yard dash with a 37-inch vertical jump, Savage has been recruited to play cornerback for the Tigers.
Savage is planning to be on the Auburn campus this weekend for his official visit. "I am looking forward to the trip," he says.
