One More Visit Planned For Speedy Defensive Back

One of South Florida's top defensive backs talks about his favorites and when he plans on making a decision.

Pompano Beach, Fla.-–Taking a break from the grind of recruiting, standout defensive back Walter McFadden from Ely High didn't take a visit this weekend but says that he has one more visit planned next weekend. He says that he has a short list of favorites heading down the homestretch towards signing day.

"I'll give you my top three, but I'll have a favorite after I take this Florida visit next weekend," McFadden tells Inside The Auburn Tigers. "My top three is basically the same. It's Auburn, South Florida has slipped in there, and Michigan State. And I go to Florida this weekend. I'll make my decision after the visit. Most likely before signing day."

The 6-0, 175-pounder with 4.4 speed in the 40-yard dash has become one of the top uncommitted players in Florida because of his combination of size and speed at the cornerback position. Auburn was one of the first schools to recognize his skills and he visited the Tigers earlier in the process back on Oct. 16 when Auburn played Arkansas. He says that the things he liked about Auburn early on are still the things he likes today.

"What I like about Auburn right now is that they're a team," McFadden says. "Everything they do is like a family. Basically nothing has changed with Auburn. It's the same things I have been saying the whole time. They keep in touch with me and they're telling me what's going on. They tell me how the players are doing in school and what they are doing now. I'm still keeping up with what Auburn is doing."

Something else in Auburn's favor is the relationship between McFadden and Tiger running back coach Eddie Gran. A longtime recruiter for Tommy Tuberville in South Florida, Gran has a solid relationship with many schools in the region and has built a kinship with McFadden as things get close to being done with this year's recruiting classes around the country.

"Coach Gran is a cool guy," McFadden says. "He's real with me. He tells me everything. If he knows something is going to happen he tells me. If they're looking at another defensive back or something like that he's real with me."

McFadden played in the Dade-Broward All-Star Game two weeks ago and was one of the top performers after not allowing a catch on him during the game. As a senior he finished with 56 tackles, seven pass break-ups and three interception on defense despite teams staying away from his side most of the time. Also a deadly kick returner, he had three kickoff return and one punt return for touchdowns.
