Football Recruiting News & Notes

The report features updates on prospects being recruited by the Tigers.

Defensive end Taurean Charles is doing a Saturday-Monday recruiting visit with the Tigers.

The 6-2, 227-pounder from Northwestern High in Miami, Fla., put together a big senior season with 150 tackles and 31 quarterback sacks. Auburn is looking to sign defensive ends with big-play potential after not getting enough pressure on opposing quarterbacks last season.

Charles has already been to North Carolina State and Rutgers. He is scheduled to visit the Florida Gators next weekend.

Tyrone Martin is shown in action during a home game in Alexander City.

More Recruiting Notes: Benjamin Russell High School linebacker Tyrone Martin, who visited Auburn last weekend, was in Gainesville for an official visit this weekend. He says the Gators are now very much in the picture and have pulled even with the Tigers. He is expected to make a final decision next week. Martin was scheduled to visit Notre Dame earlier in the recruiting process, but that visit didn't happen with two changes in the coaching staff at South Bend. He made more than 200 tackles as a senior for the Class 5A state champion Wildcats...Ole Miss is still trying to convince tight end Lawrence Lilly from Montevallo, Ala., High school to de-commit from Auburn to become a Rebel. Lilly, who is 6-4 1/2, 250 with 4.8 speed in the 40-yard dash, visited Ole Miss Jan. 18th-20th and Auburn this past weekend...Auburn has not picked up any new verbal commitments from this weekend's visitors or ones who visited previously, however, virtually no other teams in the SEC have been adding commitments on an unusually quiet period for the third weekend of January visits, which is usually a time for lots of commitment activity. One exception is that defensive end Alonzo Manuel from Jennings, La., picked LSU over Auburn, Texas A&M and others. Manuel visited Auburn Jan. 111th-13th...After this weekend, Auburn should have six official visit slots remaining if the Tigers chose to use them...
