Auburn, Ala.--The hits just keep coming for Auburn senior linebacker Travis Williams as on Thursday he was named to the preseason Butkus Award watch list.
A preseason All-Southeastern Conference first-team selection by both the coaches and the media, the Columbia, S.C. native was a first team player as a junior when he led Auburn
in tackles with 80, 58 of which were of the solo variety.
In addition to his nomination for the Butkus Award, Williams has also been named to the watch lists for the Bednarik Award, which signifies the Outstanding Defensive Player in the country, and the Lott Trophy, which is given to the Defensive Impact Player of the Year.
The Butkus Award is given annually by the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando, Inc. Celebrating its 21st anniversary, it is presented to the nation's top college linebacker. On Oct. 20 the list will be trimmed to 10 semifinalists and then to three finalists on Nov. 10.
Williams and his teammates open their season on Sept. 3 against Georgia Tech and defense of their SEC Championship the following Saturday against the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
