Coach Loves AU Commit On And Off The Field

Wadley High head coach Randy Sparks talks about Terrell Zachery, who committed to the Tigers on Sunday.

Wadley, Ala.—Wadley High head coach Randy Sparks says that he knows Auburn is getting a big-time talent in Terrell Zachery, who has been a major factor for the Bulldogs in each of his four seasons as a starter.

"Terrell is an exciting player," Sparks explains. "He is a playmaker. Obviously as a wide receiver he makes big plays for us.

"He is probably most exciting returning kicks," the coach adds. "He has had an outstanding career as a kick returner, and is also a great defensive player. He gets to the ball very quickly and just makes plays regardless of where he is playing."

Looking at his career stats, it is easy to see why Sparks can't help but give glowing reports about his star athlete.

In his four seasons, Zachery has caught 148 passes for 3,815 yards, which is an average of 25.1 yards per reception, and 42 TDs. That yardage total currently puts him in fifth place all-time in the state, and he is only 457 yards behind career leader Josh Moten of Cedar Bluff High. Also, his 42 touchdowns is eighth in the history of the state. Former Tiger Deandre Green holds the state record with 59.

Zachery works against fellow AU commit Zaccheus Etheridge at an AU camp over the summer.

Along with his prowess on offense, the talented receiver has also been deadly in the kicking game for the Bulldogs. In the punting game, he has returned 43 kicks for 1,290 yards and 8 TDs. His eight career touchdowns on punt returns places him at second on the list behind former Pike County standout Steven Coleman, who had 12. On kick returns, he has returned 31 for 1,080 yards and four scores. He also has career longs of 99 yards on a kickoff return and 97 on a punt return.

Sparks adds, however, that he feels like Zachery's ability on the field is not his best attribute, as hard as that may be to believe.

"He is an outstanding young man," his coach says. "I tell people everyday that as great as he is as a player, he is probably a better person, and that is saying a lot. He is outstanding in terms of character and morals. He is the type of kid that you would want every kid on to be."

Overall, Sparks says that he believes his mutli-talented playmaker should be able to fit very well wherever he is needed once he gets down to the Plains.

"Personally, I think he is a true receiver," he notes. "I have no doubt that he can play on the defensive side of the ball, and obviously I think he can be a great kick returner. He has tremendous hands. He has good speed, and he has a real gift for setting up his blockers once he has the ball in his hands. He is just really a complete player."
