Hoover Romps Daphne For 6A Crown

Hoover won its fourth straight title and fifth in the last six years as they defeated Daphne Saturday in Birmingham.

Birmingham, Ala.—-Two blocked punts for touchdowns early in Saturday's 6A state title game set the tone for the day as the Hoover Bucs won their seventh state championship and fourth in a row in a 56-14 whitewash over Daphne at Legion Field.

Hoover junior quarterback Ross Wilson was the individual star for the day as the passed for 235 yards and two touchdowns and ran for an additional 32 yards and two more scores as the Bucs pounded the Trojans into submission with a 35-point first half. Statistically Daphne held their own with over 400 yards of total offense, but turnovers and costly mistakes were the Trojans' undoing on this day.

Cornelius Williams was the go-to guy for the Bucs.

Early on it looked like Daphne would make a game of it with a drive deep into Hoover territory, but the first of three lost fumbles inside the Buc 20-yard line kept the Trojans off the scoreboard and took the wind out of their sails. Later in the first Daphne was backed up to its own two-yard line and forced to punt when Camyren Stokes broke through and blocked the kick and then recovered it for a touchdown.

Just moments later following a Trojan turnover it was Wilson's turn as he scored from 12 yards out on a quarterback draw to make it quickly 14-0 Hoover. Then it was time for the Bucs' special teams to go to work as they blocked their second Daphne punt of the day. It was recovered in the endzone by Max Lerner to make it 21-0.

Hoover was just getting started though as Daphne quarterback Chris Lambeth was picked off by Mike Tashman at the Trojan 30-yard line. Following a return to the 25 the Bucs took over and it didn't take long to find the endzone once again. A first down pass to Cornelius Williams for 12 yards put them in business inside the red zone where they would later punch it in from one yard out.

Now up 28-0 Hoover still wasn't done in the second quarter as they drove 74 yards in just five plays for their final score of the first half. After a 27-yard completion to Williams and a 15-yard roughing the passer penalty, the drive would eventually end with a three-yard toss to Williams for the touchdown.

The lead would build even more early in the third quarter as the Ross to Williams connection came through once again. Taking over on the Daphne 43-yard line following a short punt, it took Hoover just two plays to increase the lead once again. Following a Lamon Wiley 11-yard gain to the 32, Ross hit Williams for a touchdown to make it 42-0 and put the game out of reach.

Running back Arnil Stallworth was the workhorse for Daphne.

A big play finally put the Trojans on the board as Phillip Hardy took one to the house from 70 yards later in the third quarter to break up the shutout. A Lambeth 22-yard pass to Richie Henderson on the last play of the third quarter made it 42-14 Hoover with just 12 minutes remaining. Early in the fourth Wilson ran 42 yards for a score and the final tally of the day came on a 12-yard Chris Graham scamper for a touchdown.

Graham led the Bucs with 66 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 12 carries as Hoover finished the day with 177 yards on the ground. Williams was the leading receiver with nine catches for 153 yards and two scores. Tailback Arnil Stallworth led all rushers with 102 yards on the day as the Trojans ran for 273 yards, but it wasn't enough as Hoover rolled to the title.
