2006 Football Schedule Set

It took longer than expected, but the SEC and MAC Conferences have agreed on several changes with Auburn's upcoming football schedule.

Auburn, Ala.--Conflicts first with Tulane and then with the Mid-American Conference have kept Auburn's 2006 football schedule in limbo, but on Friday things were finalized for the Tigers in next season's 12-game schedule.

"One of our absolute values at Auburn is to 'treat others as you would like to be treated' and that is why there was a hold up on the finalization of the schedule," Jacobs said. "We wanted to cooperate and work together with other institutions to make sure everything was in place before releasing the schedule. We appreciate our Auburn fans' patience as we worked to complete the 2006 schedule."

The Tigers will open the season at home against Washington State on Sept. 2 and will follow with a trip to Mississippi State on Sept. 9. What has become a big battle, the LSU match-up has been moved to the third week of the season by the request of both teams.

"Moving the LSU game to Sept. 16 allowed us to accomplish two goals," Auburn Athletics Director Jay Jacobs said. "First, we are able to avoid playing five consecutive conference games in the middle of the schedule. Secondly, it allowed us to have our first SEC home game in September instead of the first weekend in October."

Buffalo is next up on the schedule, replacing Temple. The MAC wanted to make sure a conference team remained on Auburn's schedule and when that didn't work for Temple following the LSU move, Buffalo was named as the replacement.

Next the Tigers travel to South Carolina on Thursday night, Sept. 28 to face Steve Spurrier's Gamecocks on ESPN. Home games against Arkansas and Florida follow in the next two weeks before a home game against Tulane on Oct. 21.

Auburn will then make its third road trip of the season when it travels to Oxford to face Ole Miss. The Tigers will return home for back-to-back home games against Arkansas State and rival Georgia before closing out the season against Alabama on Oct. 18.
