Speedy Defensive Back Offered By Tigers:

This two-sport standout has received an early scholarship offer from Auburn.

Mobile, Ala.--Phelon Jones is an electrifying player in the class of 2007. The superb track athlete has his mind set to play college football, and he received a big scholarship offer Wednesday.

"Auburn offered me my first scholarship today," said Phelon Jones from McGill-Toolen High. "It was great. I've been waiting on that first scholarship offer, and I finally received it today."

"I really like Auburn a lot. They are one of my top schools. I am still going to wait to see what other offers I receive, but this is a good one. I am planning to visit Auburn for Junior Day on March 11."

Jones is the younger brother of former Louisville receiver Tiger Jones, now with Ottawah in the Canadian football league.

"Louisville has been recruiting me very hard," Jones said. "I feel like they are really close to offering me a scholarship. I am going to keep an open mind about everything right now."

Alabama, LSU and Mississippi State are also showing interest in the 6-1, 190-pound athlete. He plans to attend Alabama's Junior Day March 4 and visit Auburn the following weekend.

Jones was selected to play in the Alabama Junior All-Star game where he recorded four tackles and two pass deflections.

According to his dad, Jones set the national age group record as a sophomore in the triple jump with a jump of 49 feet, seven inches. His best long jump is 23 feet, nine inches and Jones won the state championship in Class 6A competition as a freshman and sophomore.

Jones will participate in the Scout.com All-American Combine in Tuscaloosa April 29.
