Auburn Golfer Wins Southern Amateur Title

Montgomery, Ala.--An Auburn University golfer who didn't make the cut for the 2002 NCAA Women's Golf Championship is having her moment in the spotlight, too.

Junior Anne Hutto won the Southern Amateur on Friday at Montgomery Country Club, defeating Nicole Melton of Texas A&M one-up to win the 36-hole final round. Last month, the Auburn women's team finished second nationally, its best performance ever at the NCAA Championship.

In her run to the title in Montgomery, the All-SEC performer from Birmingham took out Curtis Cup champion Robin Burke two-and-one in the quarter-finals. She then defeated Ann Pohira three-and-two in the semi-finals.

"It is a thrill to win such an outstanding tournament," Hutto said. "Every match I played went down to the 17th or 18th hole and the championship went to the 36th hole. I was fortunate to play very good golf this week against a very good field. It was a fun week."

After a close call with winning the national title in 2002, the Auburn women will return for another run at the 2003 title. Courtney Swaim is the only member one of the five-player Auburn NCAA Championship team who was a senior this season.
