Tigers Open Spring Drills On Tuesday

The Tigers will be looking to replace 15 lettermen as spring training begins.

Auburn, Ala.--The Auburn football coaching staff has a busy week planned with the start of spring football practice on Tuesday and its annual high school coaching clinic that will run Thursday and Friday.

Coach Tommy Tuberville and his staff only get 15 practice days during spring training, like all other Division I teams, and for the first two workouts no pads are allowed. The Tigers will drill Tuesday and Wednesday in shorts and will put on the pads for the first time on Thursday.

The Tigers will also have a full pads practice on Friday and then scrimmage for the first time on Saturday morning.

Week two will feature practices Tuesday through Saturday with scrimmage number two planned on the Saturday (March 11th).

Week three of spring drills has practices scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday prior to the annual A-Day spring game at 1 p.m. on Saturday March 18th at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Kickoff time for the game is at 1 p.m.

The Tigers are planning to wrap up spring drills with practices number 14 and 15 on Tuesday the 21st and the following day.

The Tigers will miss 2005 seniors like wide receiver Devin Aromashodu, who helped the Tigers win 39 games the past four seasons.

Auburn is coming off a 9-3 season that included a share of the SEC West title, but LSU won the head to head meeting and a spot in the league championship game. The Tigers must replace 11 starters, but have 48 lettermen returning, including 25 on defense for new coordinator Will Muschamp to work with starting on Tuesday.

Muschamp was hired from the NFL's Miami Dolphins to take over for David Gibbs, who left Auburn to coach with the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs. Like Gibbs, Muschamp will work with the cornerbacks and safeties.

The Tigers will also go to practice with another new coach on defense as James Willis, a former Tiger star and NFL player, returns to his alma mater to take over as linebacker coach. He was a graduate assistant at that position under Joe Whitt, the man he is replacing. Willis coached at Rhode Island last season. He had joined the staff at Temple when hired by AU.

The Tigers had a dismal close to last season with a poor performance in a bowl loss to underdog Wisconsin. Tuberville says that game was a major disappointment after finishing the regular season with impressive victories over Georgia and Alabama.

"I thought last fall, if you just go back and look at the season, we hit our stride pretty good at the end of the year," Tuberville says. "I thought we played well on offense and defense and complemented each other very well. We get into the last game of the season, which was the bowl game for us, and we didn't do that."

Safety Steve Gandy will be trying to impress new Auburn coach Will Muschamp this spring.

Some of the key points of emphasis for spring 2006 practices include:

*Defensively, the Tigers will look to rebuild on the interior front line where starters Tommy Jackson and Wayne Dickens played last fall.

*The Tigers also need to replace a pair of senior starters at linebacker--Travis Williams and Antarrious Williams.

*The offense has major rebuilding to do in the receiving corps with the loss of four seniors--wideouts Ben Obomanu, Anthony Mix and Devin Aromashodu along with tight end Cooper Wallace.

*Although the Tigers return All-SEC tailback Kenny Irons and a variety of other running backs, the offense will need to find a replacement for hard-nosed fullback Jake Slaughter.

*The Tigers will also be looking to replace starting tackles Marcus McNeill and Troy Reddick, who were major contributors for four seasons on the offensive line.

*Eight offensive lettermen are gone from 2005. The group includes Aromashoud, McNeill, Mix, Obomanu, Reddick, Slaughter, Wallace and Steven Ross.

*AU has six defensive lettermen who are gone--Dickens, Jackson plus linebackers Williams and Williams along with safety Kevin Hobbs and underclassman defensive end Stanley McClover.

*Deep snapper Chas Crofoot must also be replaced.
