SEC Honors Three AU Basketball Players

Birmingham, Ala.--Two Tigers were selected to the All-SEC Women's Basketball Freshman team and an Auburn senior has also been honored.

DeWanna Bonner and Keke Carrier have been chosen to the freshman all-star team while senior center Marita Payne has been named a second team All-SEC selection.

Seimone Augustus of LSU is the SEC Player of the Year and former Auburn assistant coach Mickie DeMoss, who led Kentucky to a fourth place finish in the league, is the SEC Coach of the Year. UK posted a 20-7 overall regular season mark and a 9-5 conference record.

Bonner, a 6-5 guard/forward from Fairfield, is scoring a team-high 13.2 points per game and is on her way to becoming the first freshman to lead Auburn in scoring since All-American center Becky Jackson did it in 1980-81. Bonner is second on the team with 6.3 rebounds per contest.

Carrier, a 6-7 center from Lake Charles, La., is averaging 9.1 points and 4.6 rebounds per contest. She has blocked 40 shots this season.

Marita Payne is one of two seniors on the Auburn team.

Payne, a 6-7 center, leads the SEC in blocked shots with 104. She is averaging 8.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per contest.

First team All-SEC picks are LSU's Sylvia Fowles and Tasha Humphrey and Sherill Baker of Georgia. Other first-team picks are Candace Parker of Tennessee, who is the SEC Freshman of the Year, Armintie Price of Ole Miss, Dalila Eshe of Florida, Tennessee's Shanna Zolman and Vanderbilt's Dee Davis.

Joining Payne on the second team are Navonda Moore of Alabama, Sha Brooks of Florida, Cori Chambers of Georgia, Samantha Mahoney of Kentucky, Scolanda Hoston of LSU, Melanie Johnson of South Carolina, Alexis Hornbuckle of Tennessee and Caroline Williams of Vanderbilt.

Auburn is traveling to North Little Rock, Ark., to open play in the league tournament with a 2:30 p.m. contest on Thursday vs. South Carolina.
