Tuesday Football Practice Notes

News and notes from Auburn's seventh spring football practice are featured.

*One of the best moves of the spring by an Auburn running back happened Tuesday in the 11 on 11 work as Ben Tate escaped a hit in the backfield when defensive end Antonio Coleman swooped in to make a tackle but got nothing but air. Tuberville says Tate, the 17-year-old early high school graduate, continues to show a lot of maturity. Senior tailback Kenny Irons is helping the freshman make the adjustment to college.

*Later in the 11 on 11 work, Antonio Coleman had a chance to make another big play behind the line of scrimmage and got a QB sack.

Sophomore tailback Brad Lester, who was number 28 last season, is wearing No. 1 this spring. Lester has been running the ball well through the first seven days of spring drills. At Tuesday's session, he made a long run after catching a screen pass in the 11 on 11 work.

*With walk-ons Stephen Gowland and Danny Perry moving to fullback, there is a shortage of tight ends on the field this spring. Position coach Steve Ensminger has had just two to work with this spring with senior Cole Bennett and redshirt freshman Tommy Trott available. The number is expected to grow to three later this week when redshirt freshman Gabe McKenzie returns from a hamstring injury. A fourth player could be in the mix this fall with the Tigers signing Michael Goggans from Benjamin Russell High in Alex City.

*Injured Tigers McKenzie and Lorenzo Ferguson, a sophomore safety making the move from cornerback, were running on a separate field at Tuesday's practice. Tiger coaches are hoping to have them ready for scrimmage two on Saturday.

*Tommy Tuberville noted after Tuesday's practice the Tigers are making strides with their punting game on coverages and protections. With Kody Bliss returning as a senior, the Tigers should have one of the nation's top punters this fall.

*The Tigers worked on blitzes and blitz protections in Tuesday's workout.

*Returning All-SEC tailback Kenny Irons had an impressive day running the football in the 11 on 11 work. Irons showed excellent quickness every time he touched the football.

*DE Quentin Groves made an excellent play on a screen pass from Brandon Cox in the 11 on 11 work. He showed his quickness to get to the ball and then raced away for a TD on an interception.
