Football Scrimmage Two Notes, Part I

Notes and quotes from Saturday's Auburn football scrimmage are featured.

*Alonzo Horton had a big day at defensive end. The redshirt freshman said after the scrimmage that it was his best day of practice since becoming an Auburn football player. He had 2 1/2 sacks and seven total tackles.

*Another defensive end, Octavius Balkcom, continues his improvement this spring. He had a big day rushing the quarterback with three sacks.

*Defensive end Quentin Groves had 2 1/2 sacks and eight tackles.

*The four tailbacks had 69 carries in the scrimmage for 286 yards. Tre Smith had 94 yards on 20 carries. Ben Tate had 18 for 83 yards.

*Brandon Cox hit 19-30 passes for 161 yards and a touchdown to Lee guess.

*Calvin Booker hit 4-10 for 61 yards.

*Blake Field hit 6-14 passes for 53 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions.

*Kenny Irons carried the ball 11 times for 53 yards.

*Tre Smith had a big day receiving. He had nine catches for 55 yards.

*Among the wideouts, senior Lee Guess led the way with four catches for 45 yards.

*The field goal kicking was perfect. John Vaughn was 3-3 from 24, 37 and 42 yards out. Zach Kutch was 3-3 from the same distances and Matt Clark made 37 and 42 yard field goals with plenty of room to spare.

*Will Herring was busy at outside linebacker. He led all tacklers with 14, two more than safety Steve Gandy. Safety Tristan Davis was in on 11 stops.

Westlake High star Cameron Newton visited Auburn on Saturday.

*Auburn had more than 200 prospects and suspects visiting the scrimmage on Saturday. Highly regarded prospect Cameron Newton, a quarterback from Westlake High was there, as was cornerback Ryan Williams from B.C. Rain in Mobile.
