Tigers Win Another Tournament

Blythewood, S.C.--Auburn won its second straight women's golf tournament with a comfortable 18-stroke advantage over runnerup Tennessee at the 11-team Lady Gamecock Classic.

Senior Maria Martinez won the individual title at four-under-par 212 with rounds of 73, 68 and a 71 on Sunday. She finished four strokes ahead of runnerup Caroline Westrup of FSU.

Auburn opened the event with a 304 on Friday, shot 278 on Saturday and a 297 on Sunday to finish with an 879 total. Tennessee shot a 309 on Sunday to finish at 897. FSU was third at 898 and Virginia fourth at 899.

Auburn junior Nicole Hage finished in fifth place at three-over-par 219. AU sophomore Margaret Shirley tied for eighth at 222, sophomore Abigale Schepperle tied for 22nd at 228 and junior Jessica Lovell tied for 36th at 232.

"I am so proud of the girls," said AU coach Kim Evans, whose team won its spring opener tournament at LSU. "We have really grown in this spring season and things seem to be coming together for us. Like I said yesterday, everyone had a strong performance and kept working hard and overcame a tough first round."
