Prospect Feels The Love On AU Visit

A report on football prospect Phelon Jones is featured.

Mobile, Ala.--McGill-Toolen's Phelon Jones is one of the top athletes in the South for the class of 2007. The 6-1, 190-pound football prospect collected three big offers last week, and he took an unofficial visit this weekend to Auburn.

"I received offers in the mail last week from Ohio State, Virginia Tech and Michigan," Jones says. "I have offers from Alabama, Auburn, Louisville and Ole Miss as well. I was really excited when I received those three offers.

"It's not too often you see a school like Virginia Tech or Michigan recruiting someone from this area," he adds. "It makes me feel real good. I hope to make visits to all those schools this summer. Right now all of the schools who have offered are equal on my list."

The Auburn Tigers extended the first scholarship offer to the in-state cornerback, and Jones enjoyed his time on the Plains.

"The visit to Auburn was really good," he says. "I met the coaches. I talked to coach (James) Willis, Coach (Will) Muschamp and Coach (Tommy) Tuberville. It was nice to be around them. They showed me a lot of love.

"Coach Muschamp was real cool. I have known him for a while. My former head coach at St. Paul's used to coach him. He recruited Chevis Jackson to LSU when Chevis played with me at St. Paul's. I spent a lot of time with him on Saturday and got to know him a lot better.

"The practice was good. I think Auburn is going to have a really good team this year. The defensive backs are big-time hitters.

"The academic center is real nice," Jones says. "They have laptops and one-on-one tutoring. They have a building based on nothing, but academics. I liked the weight room a lot. I spoke with the strength coach. He was real cool."

Jones has missed his past two track meets due to Junior Day at Alabama and Auburn. He competes in the triple jump, long jump and high jump.

He will participate in the All-American Combine in Tuscaloosa April 29.
