Smith Sparks Offense In Thursday Scrimmage

Tre Smith has a lot to smile about this spring.

Auburn, Ala.--Tre Smith was smiling on Thursday night and why not? The senior running back just finished another strong performance as the Tigers had a major scrimmage just two days before their annual A-Day Game.

Smith came through with several nice plays, including a 58-yard catch and run on the screen play that sparked the offense to a comeback after being dominated for the first half of the scrimmage.

"I was out there having fun," Smith tells Inside the Auburn Tigers. "It was as much fun as I have had out there in a long time. I felt real good out there."

Smith, who had a disappointing junior season after having an emergency appendectomy before the season, is obviously quicker than he was last fall.

"I know I feel stronger out there this season," he says. "I guess it might appear that I look quicker."

Smith says he doesn't know exactly what his role in the 2006 offense will be. "That is something that can change between now and tomorrow," he says. "I do know this. Coach (Al) Borges knows what he is doing and I will do whatever he asks me to do. Whether they want me to catch passes or run the ball 30 times a game, I will do whatever."

Smith looks up field after catching a screen pass in Thursday's scrimmage.

Center Joe Cope (50) is downfield to make a block for the running back.

Smith prepares to hit high gear with some open field and Will Herring and Sen'Derrick Marks giving chase.

Quentin Groves (54) and Aairon Savage couldn't catch Smith before he got to the end zone.

Smith had nine pass receptions last Saturday in the scrimmage. He had two more for 68 yards on Thursday and had two strong runs for 14 yards. One of them was a seven-yard sweep of right end for a score.

Smith is lining up at both tailback, fullback and receiver.

"I think the offense took a big step forward today," he says.

Smith and the Tigers will have a light practice in shorts on Friday and then play the annual spring game at 1:05 p.m. on Saturday.
