Slater Chosen To Represent USA

Auburn, Ala.--Auburn head baseball coach Tom Slater has been selected as an assistant for USA Baseball's 2006 National Team.

Slater, in his second season as head coach of the Tigers, is the first Auburn coach to be selected to the team. Vanderbilt's Tim Corbin was named the head coach for the USA.

"It is an honor to be asked to represent the USA in any capacity and to be asked to be a part of the USA National coaching staff with such a fine group of other college coaches is certainly a tremendous opportunity," Slater says. "I look forward to helping the National Team have great success."

Also selected to the staff are Mark Machtolf of Gonzaga and Jim Schlossnagle of Texas Christian.

"USA Baseball is extremely fortunate to have each on of these outstanding coaches dedicate their summer to our program," says Eric Campbell, USA Baseball General Manager of National Teams.

While Slater is the first AU coach to be chosen to the team, four Auburn players have previously been selected--Gregg Olson (1987), Mark Bellhorn (1993 and 1994), John Powell (1993) and Steven Register (2003).

In June, USA Baseball will invite 36 of the nation's top freshman and sophomore collegiate players to the USA Baseball National Team Trials. After the team is selected, Corbin will guide Team USA through their fourth summer of play at Durham Bulls Athletic Park and end the summer competing in the III FISU World University Baseball Championships in Havana, Cuba. Team USA will also compete in the 35th Annual USA vs. Japan Collegiate All-Star Series (sites TBD) and several international Friendship Series. The entire 2006 USA Baseball National Team game schedule will be announced at a later date.

The Tigers (12-15) play at Troy (16-9) at 6 p.m.on Tuesday. Auburn won the previous meeting this season 5-4 in 10 innings.
