Payne Picked in WNBA Draft

Auburn, Ala.--Auburn senior Marita Payne has been selected in the third round of the WNBA Draft. She was taken as the final pick in the three round draft.

The Connecticut Sun drafted the 6-7 center on Wednesday as she became the sixth Auburn women's basketball player to be chosen in the WNBA Draft.

The Sun already has one former AU player on the roster, Le'Coe Willingham. Payne is expected to join Willingham for preseason practices later this month.

"I was patiently waiting by my computer and was pretty excited when I saw my name," said Payne, who is the top shot blocker in Auburn history. "I thought it was funny that I was the very last name, but it really doesn't matter what number you are, you just have to make the most of the opportunity."

Marita Payne is shown in action vs. Alabama.

AU's last WNBA draft pick came in 2000 when Monique Morehouse was selected by the Cleveland Rockers.

Payne set an SEC single-season record for blocked shots in a season with 141 as a junior. She finished her career with 377, which is second in conference history.

As a senior Payne averaged 7.9 points and 6.5 rebounds per contest while hitting 52.6 percent of her field goals.
