Martinez, Shirley Win Awards

Maria Martinez has been honored for her play on the course and Margaret Shirley has been honored for her work off the course.

Auburn, Ala.--Auburn senior golfer Maria Martinez has been named Golfweek national Player of the Week following her performance over the weekend in leading her team to the SEC Championship in Nashville.

Martinez was 5-under par for the tournament and sank birdies on 17 and 18 on the final day to give Auburn a one-stroke victory over Tennessee. Her -5 performance also gave her the SEC individual title and the Tigers' third SEC title in the last four years.

Martinez pumps her fist in the air after sinking the tournament-winning birdie.

Auburn sophomore Margaret Shirley has also been named to the SEC Women's Golf Good Works Team for her devotion to community services.

Shirley volunteers at the Atlanta Junior Golf Association and is a member of the Auburn Student-Athlete Advisory Committee where she has assisted in planning canned food and clothing drives in the Auburn and Opelika area.

The Auburn women's golf team will travel to Columbus, Ohio, for the Lady Buckeye Invite on April 22 and 23 at the Golf Club of Dublin.
