Muschamp Looking For More Intensity

Defensive coordinator Will Muschamp is looking for improvement following Auburn's first preseason scrimmage.

Auburn, Ala.--Al Borges talked about a variety of specific things he wants to see his offense improve following Auburn's first preseason football scrimmage. However, new defensive coordinator Will Muschamp was harping on a mental theme after the first of two practices for the Tigers on Thursday.

"Effort, toughness and leadership--that's it," Muschamp says when talking about what he didn't like about Wednesday's scrimmage from a defensive standpoint. He notes that he will be grading the Tigers in those three areas for the rest of their practices this week and on a scrimmage planned for 10 a.m. on Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

"We don't have enough guys who buy into that," says Muschamp, who kept a close eye on the action as the Tigers spent a significant portion of Thursday's two-hour practice session doing 11 on 11 work in full pads matching the one offense vs. the one defense and the twos vs. twos in the August heat.

"We have just got to develop more leadership on the team," Muschamp says. "It showed up today. We get tired and don't have enough guys to step up and make plays."

At Thursday's practice, there were no changes on the depth chart with the first team from Wednesday's scrimmage. The Tigers, who will practice again at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, are expected to work out in shorts for the second session.
