Auburn Spring Football Scrimmage Notes Part I

Notes are featured from Auburn's first spring football scrimmage on Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Notes from Saturday's scrimmage:

*Brad Lester looked exceptionally quick at tailback and led all rushers with 80 yards on 18 carries.

*The scrimmage featured plenty of big hits. The linebacker group was particularly impressive with Chris Evans, Craig Stevens, Courtney Harden and Patrick Trahan all having big plays.

*On the subject of Evans, it was his most impressive day of practice as a college player. He had 11 tackles. Trahan was right behind with 10 and Stevens made nine tackles.

*On the subject of linebackers, Auburn signee Eltoro Freeman from Alex City watched the scrimmage. Other AU signees watching the action included Ryan Williams, Ryan Pugh and Michael McNeil.

*Brandon Cox was impressive. He was 13-23 for 138 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. He was much, much more mobile than he was from the LSU game on last season and it makes a difference in the passing game. He had another pass or two that could have been caught and threw the ball away when receivers were covered.

*None of the backup quarterbacks distinguished themselves in the scrimmage. Neil Caudle threw a touchdown pass, but that was his only completion in eight pass attempts and he threw the only interception of the day.

*The leading receiver in the scrimmage was Rodgeriqus Smith with four catches for 71 yards and one touchdown catch.

*Third string walk-on kicker Ross Gornall was 3-3 on field goals and outperformed Zach Kutch and Tyler DiPace. *There were approximately 120 junior prospects watching the scrimmage. The group included in-state bluechippers such as Justin Albert of Prattville, Dee Finley of Auburn High, Tyler Love of Mountain Brook and Mark Barron of St. Paul's in Mobile.
