Football Scrimmage Two Notes

News and notes from Auburn University's second major football spring scrimmage are featured.

*Once again the defense dominated the action in a scrimmage as the first-team offense managed very little in the way of yardage against the first-team defense. Much like last Saturday, it was linebackers Patrick Trahan and Chris Evans who did a lot of the damage. Both played well and had another good tackling day.

*The story of the day on defense had to be redshirt freshman defensive lineman Mike Blanc. Rotating between the second and first teams, Blanc was in the backfield all day on quarterback pressures and a sack that forced the QBs to throw the ball away. He returned to action after taking a blow to his knee that re-aggravated an earlier injury.

Quarterback Brandon Cox is still head and shoulders above the competition in the spring. Showing off his stronger arm, Cox had a nice throw to Rodgeriqus Smith early in the scrimmage for a 22-yard gain. Later he made the block of the day on a catch by Montez Billings. Reversing his field, Billings ran back through the backfield where Cox upended Quentin Groves much to the delight of fans in attendance.

*The kicking race appears to be coming closer to an end for this spring as walk-on Ross Gornall was perfect on the day and took another step forward in his quest to be Auburn's kicker next season. Showing a stronger leg than either Zach Kutch or Tyler DiPace, Gornall helped himself tremendously with a strong performance on Saturday.

*Chris Evans was again the leading tackler with 11 stops, although only two were solos. Safety Aairon Savage and LB Craig Stevens were next in tackles with 10 apiece. Savage had five solos and Stevens had four.

*Defensive end Octavius Balkcom had one of his more active days with eight tackles.

*Tristan Davis with 20 carries for 79 yards was the leading rusher. It was a major improvement over his previous scrimmage in which he netted 13 yards on 14 carries while fumbling twice. Brad Lester was next in rushing yards with 18 carries for 67.

*Rodgeriqus Smith has four catches for 57 yards to lead the receiver.

Not counting a two-minute drill at the end of the scrimmage, Brandon Cox hit 10-22 passes for 110 yards with no interceptions. Neil Caudle hit 6-10 passes for 163 yards and two TDs with one interception. His TD passes were against a combination of third and fourth team defenders. Steven Ensminger was 7-17 with one interception for 129 yards.

*Tight end Tommy Trott had the second most catches with three for 55 yards.
