A player who went into the session not likely high on the NFL scouts' must-see list, Dede opened a lot of eyes with his performance at the Auburn football complex.
Checking in at 5-11, 221 pounds, the Auburn linebacker smoked his 40-yard dash with a hand-timed 4.41 on the first of two tries to impress the pro scouts. He first time was so good he didn't bother with a second one.
"I am really happy about how everything went today and I can't wait to call my mom and tell her about it," Dede says. "We prayed and prayed. She had been nervous all week and yesterday she called me and said, ‘I have got butterflies. You are going to do really well well tomorrow.' I said that is good mom. She said I will talk to you tomorrow and that is it."
Dede also was impressive in the standing broad jump with an effort of 10 feet. "I had never jumped 10 feet before in training," he notes. "I have been jumping nine feet, four inches."
The linebacker was also good in the vertical jump and on the bench press. "I was hoping to jump 36 inches and I went 35 1/2 inches so that is okay. I did 17 reps on the bench press (at 225 pounds) and I am pleased with that, too."
Dede, who has played both safety and linebacker at Auburn, worked out at both positions for the pros. With temperatures in the low 80s he had quite a long and demanding workout.
"I am ready to go get iced down," he noted after the session. "The scouts really worked me out hard in the position drills. The linebacker drills were so long and so tough I didn't know if I was going to get through them. When we stopped I said, ‘I have got to reload before I went back out there for the defensive back drills.' It is like in a football game. You are out there for a 10-play series and then you are immediately back out there when somebody intercepts a pass so you have to tough it out and compete."
Dede has been in the Atlanta area in recent weeks training with Chip Smith at Competitive Edge Sports. "It helped me tremendously," he says. "Will Herring worked out there the majority of time he worked out along with Ben Grubbs, Kody Bliss and Marquies Gunn and I think it showed. We came back to Auburn and we all did well."
Grubbs put on a show with 35 reps on the bench press, Bliss punted the ball well, some stopwatches had Gunn at under 4.7 in the 40-yard dash and Will Herring turned in back to back times of 4.50 and 4.47 in the 40.
"The official numbers in the 40 aren't out yet, but hopefully I will be at 4.41 or 4.4 flat or something in that range," Dede says. "I think weighing in at 221 that time is a real good time."
"I had never jumped 10 feet on the broad jump since I have been training," Dede adds. "I have been jumping 9-4 on the broad jump and today I jumped 10 so that was a surprise."
Following the workout a scout for the Indianapolis Colts interviewed Dede and had the former Tiger fill out paperwork. "After today I think there is going to be a lot more interest," Dede says. "I think they had me in the books at like a 4.68 or something high. I think what I did turned some heads."
